Three ideas of a better world

This is about THE three authors of the classic utopian novel: Francis Bacon, Thomas More, and Thomas Campanellas. "Nova Atlantis", "Utopia" and the "Sunshine State" have something in common: I wouldn't want to live there - and you probably wouldn't either, even though the three authors each saw the societies they described as thoroughly positive counter-designs to existing forms of society.

 

 

 

Lecture: The Idea of the Idea, 9th session.

The question is not whether angels exist or not, but the presentation of a small facet of our culture or history of ideas. In earlier times, angels were not seen, but looked at. And the fact that there was something to look at is due to the fact that many thousands of years of looking at angels have always led to visualizations. So it is not about "angels per se", but about attributions and among other things the question, whether they have wings and how these are if necessary: Huge? Tiny? And whether they are able to fly at all. And other unsolved problems. How many angels are there? When were they created? Do humans become angels after death or just HOW angels? And, to anticipate: There are no solutions here.

The one-act play has no plot. All that is offered is, and that is something, a view of certain, selected conditions and occurrences in the Carolingian Empire condensed in quotations and more or less blasphemous remarks. Presented by students of European Cultural History at KIT.

Abstracts:

Not the great controversies of the Middle Ages (Rome versus Constantinople, emperor versus pope and sovereigns, etc.), but the "smaller" ones, so to speak, but nevertheless significant in their time and for certain circles (e.g., "How much logic may it be?") are thematized in disputes.
