Introduction to the Cultural History of Technology: From High Industrialization to Technocratic High Modernity (ca. 1850 - 1914)

The lecture, which is designed as an introductory survey, focuses on the economic, social and cultural contexts of the emergence and use of technology from the second half of the 19th century to the eve of the First World War. In addition to the leading sectors of the "Second Industrial Revolution" and the technologization of everyday life, special emphasis is placed on technologies in colonial contexts and the arms race of the European powers as well as periodization issues.

The course requirements for successful participation include regular reading of the texts provided on Illias as well as the preparation of written assignments totaling approximately five pages.
