  • Populism and nationalism among us - not among others

At the beginning of the year, the regional bishop commented on the culture of dialogue: "As churches, we are committed to ensuring that people treat each other with respect. (...) We oppose anything that sows enmity or reinforces prejudices. On the other hand, we do not want to remain among ourselves, but also seek dialogue with people who hold different opinions (...). We need a culture of conversation that practices respectful interaction (...)" But how do we counter populism and nationalism in close proximity, i.e. also in church and communities? Historical research on nationalism and populism has some experience with these questions, which Pastor Susanne Labsch and Prof. Rolf-Ulrich Kunze will discuss. The issue is the attitude that the regional bishop has urged: "We have to get out of the idea: freedom, that is above all my right, my advantage, me first. To put oneself in the place of others is not always easy or simple. But the other person is entrusted to me by Christ. He or she is loved by Christ as I am. This allows for respectful, mindful interaction."
