The Department of History at KIT has two main focuses in research and teaching: The cultural history of technology and the environment on one hand, and political and general history on the other. We offer our teaching in the study program "European Culture and History of Ideas" at the KIT Faculty of Humanities as well as in other subjects from the humanities and the technical sciences.
In the cultural history of technology, one focus is the history of mobility. Other topics include the history of technical knowledge and the engineering profession. Special interest is attached to practice-oriented communication of knowledge in the history of technology. In political history the focus is on the history of Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Other research topics currently being pursued include university history and the history of the family unit. Furthermore, we serve as a contact and cooperate on historical topics at KIT as well as in the city Karlsruhe and its environs, especially for the media.
As a branch of the Institute of Technology Futures, we contribute research results of technology and environmental history to the social debates on future issues. We define Technology Futures as the ways in which societies communicate about the future uses of technology - whether linguistically, with images, or by emotive persuasion. The historical perspective can thus uncover long-term continuities or ruptures in communication about future technological developments.
KITResearch colloquium on the topic of "Colonialism at the university"
On July 8, Charlotte Prauß (Göttingen/Gießen) presented an excerpt from her dissertation project "Wissen schaffen und Kolonialismus an der Göttinger Universität zwischen 1880 und 1945". In an interesting presentation, she used lecture notes to analyze when and in which subject areas colonial knowledge found its way into courses at Göttingen University. In particular, she repeatedly addressed the overarching question of how to define the colonial in the production of knowledge during this period.
On June 5 and 6, Nicole Hesse and Silke Zimmer-Merkle organized a workshop entitled "Environmental Saving. Historical perspectives on practices of thrift and renunciation" at KIT. The workshop dealt with theoretical and methodological questions and discussed historical case studies.
This work by Anna-Maria Winkler examines technical, economic, ecological and political aspects of the disposal of cars in Germany and Austria in the second half of the 20th century. Topics such as scrapping techniques, the limits of automobile recycling, dealing with used tires, product responsibility, etc. are dealt with in the volume, which was published in the series Studien zur Geschichte von Technik, Arbeit und Umwelt and is freely available on the publisher's website.

In March of this year, Désirée Schauz was a guest at the Indian Birla Institute for Technology and Science (BITS Pilani, Goa Campus). Together with colleagues from BITS Pilani and the Rhine Ruhr Center for Science Communication Research (RRC), she taught students from science and engineering degree programs in a seminar on "The Sciences and the Humanities: Two Cultures?" The teaching collaboration is part of the international and interdisciplinary SPARC project "Public Humanities and Ethnography of Humanities Education", which is funded by the Indian government. The aim of the project is to examine the role of the humanities and social sciences at technical universities and to develop formats for interdisciplinary teaching.
Alwin J. Cubasch's volume illuminates the rise and fall of vending machine restaurants in turn-of-the-century Berlin, shedding light on the scope and limits of technological design motivated during high modernism. The book is published in the series Studien zur Geschichte von Technik, Arbeit und Umwelt, edited by Marcus Popplow and Torsten Meyer and won the VDI Conrad Matschoß prize for history of technology.

In his lecture on June 3, Manuel Clancett (TU Dresden) spoke on the topic of "Nazistische Denkgewöhnung: Leitbegriffe und Denkfiguren der Kulturwissenschaftler an der TH Dresden (1920-1945)" as part of the research colloquium at the History Department. Clancett is a doctoral fellow in the research training group "Die Technische Hochschule Dresden im Nationalsozialismus".

On May 20, Aron Schulze from TU Dresden was a guest at the research colloquium. His contribution was also part of the general topic "History of technical universities". Using the example of TU Dresden, he spoke about the economization processes of technical universities in the transformation phase of the 1990s. His research shed light on an aspect of university history that has hardly been researched to date.

Silke Zimmer-Merkle will speak at the Monday Colloquium of the Deutsches Museum, Munich on May 5. Under the title "From the spirit of adventure to automation - driver assistance systems between the history of technology and technology assessment", she will give an insight into the results of her dissertation on the history of automotive assistance systems. The event will be broadcast live on the internet.
Rolf-Ulrich Kunze speaks in an interview with Dr. Stefan Fuchs in the Campus Report's "Forum" series on the topic of "Technofascism?" at the start of the Trump presidency.
How can sources such as private photo albums contribute to historical research? What insight do they offer into everyday culture and interaction with contemporary history? Sophia Merkel had the opportunity to talk to Marco Krefting from dpa about these and similar questions. The article resulting from this conversation was published in various daily newspapers. On January 25, 2025, Andrea Acle-Kreysing with her seminar visited the Haus der Geschichte in Stuttgart. The focus was on objects in the permanent exhibition that symbolize migration in different eras. The "hunger bread", which recalled the emigration during the drought in the early 19th century, as well as stories of political exiles from Baden-Württemberg after 1848 and experiences of flight and expulsion during the Nazi era up to the 1950s were impressive.
As part of the seminar "Rationalization, automation and digitalization. Technology and work in the 20th century" by Désirée Schauz, students gained impressive insights into the history of the development of technology, media and energy during an excursion to the Technoseum in Mannheim.
On January 21,Elias Blüml (University of Augsburg) presented the results of his published master's thesis on early bicycle history in Augsburg at the research colloquium. In an exciting lecture, he traced the local negotiation processes surrounding mobility spaces and their manifestation in legal and administrative regulations.
K. Windisch Lecture on the topic "The martyr cult under National Socialism"
In the lecture series of the AG Geschichtliche Landeskunde am Oberrhein at the Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe, Martin Ullmann spoke on January 17 on the topic: "Ein badischer Horst Wessel? The posthumous reception of SA man Paul Billet in the Karlsruhe press 1931-1945". The lecture shed light on the National Socialist cult of martyrdom and political debates in the press at the end of the Weimar Republic and during National Socialism. The lecture was based on research for a module examination in the MA program European Culture and History of Ideas.

On January 14, Falko Schmieder (ZfL Berlin) was a guest at the research colloquium. He presented the project "The 20th century in basic terms. Dictionary of Historical Semantics" and inspired a lively discussion on the history of concepts, the digital humanities and the implementation of such a project.

Stefan Esselborn (University of Stuttgart) enriched the program of the research colloquium on 17 December with a lecture on risk knowledge in dealing with nuclear energy in the 1960-1980s. The exciting exchange focused on the establishment and institutionalization of probabilistic risk calculation as a new field of research and business in these decades and the resulting influences.

The panel discussion Between general education and reflection on technology? The past and future of the humanities at technical universities as part of the Colloquium Fundamentale deals with the relationship between the humanities and natural sciences. In the run-up to the KIT anniversary in 2025, scientists from various disciplines discussed developments, the current status and possible future roles of the humanities at technical universities. The event, moderated by Désirée Schauz and Marcus Popplow, took place on December 17, 2024.
Nicole Hesse contributed to the Night of Science at KIT in November 2024 with a lecture on the history of energy. The knowledge of how today's dominant energy systems "came into the world" has largely been lost in everyday life - especially for electricity in most Western societies: it is simply always there. The lecture shed light on these processes of change through historical highlights, inviting discussion on what knowledge from energy history can do for us - not least in the transformation towards a sustainable energy supply.
The dissertation Fahrassistenz: Historische Perspektiven auf automobile Assistenzsysteme by Silke Zimmer-Merkle examines the history of automotive assistance systems within the research fields of the history of technology and technology assessment, which is told in a broad perspective from the end of the 19th century to the present day. Since assistance systems in cars are often thought of as enabling technologies for autonomous driving and are formulated as such in the discourse, a historical investigation of this subject, which has not yet been systematically explored by historians, is an obvious step, not least in order to expand the scientific treatment of the topic to include a historical perspective.
Marcus Popplow spoke on behalf of KIT at the 14th Carl Benz Memorial Lecture on November 28 on the topic: "Historical aspects of sustainable mobility of the future". Find here the program of the event.
Ole Sparenberg is the first to examine the history of manganese nodules from their discovery in 1873 to the present day. This study shows why an economic interest in these minerals from the deep sea developed from the 1950s onwards, culminating in mining tests in 1978 before the projects were discontinued. It was not until the 21st century that interest in deep-sea mining revived, but today it is increasingly being met with discussions about the ecological consequences.
The current monograph "Über Sparsamkeit. A history of culture and mentality" by Rolf-Ulrich Kunze has been published by Kohlhammer. Using numerous sources - from cookbooks, advertising and media reports to advice literature - the book examines how ideas about thriftiness have developed in West Germany since 1950 and how they have become part of everyday life.
In the series Studien zur Geschichte von Technik, Arbeit und Umwelt, edited by Marcus Popplow and Torsten Meyer, the volume 46 Aral. 125 Years of the Fuel Industry in Germany by Dietmar Bleidick has been published. The two-volume edition traces the 125-year history of the industry for the first time using Aral as an example. In addition to company and product development, the filling station business and the brand, the focus is on social and political conditions, the effects of mass motorization and, last but not least, the price of fuel.

Das KIT ist in seinen beiden Vorgängereinrichtungen, der Technischen Hochschule und dem Kernforschungszentrum, stets eine Quelle für Innovation und Fortschritt gewesen und ist dies weiterhin. Anders als bei vielen anderen technischen Forschungseinrichtungen wurde hier die Verantwortung gegenüber der Gesellschaft bereits seit den 1970er Jahren anerkannt, so vor allem in Ethik und Technikfolgenabschätzung, heute auch in Bezug auf Nachhaltigkeit. Dass der Deutsche Bundestag nunmehr seit über 30 Jahren aus dem KIT heraus zu Fragen des technischen und wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts beraten wird und dass am KIT Pionierarbeit zur Reallaborforschung geleistet wurde, sind keine Zufälle. Vielmehr bauen sie auf einer jahrzehntelangen Tradition auf, die heute zu den Alleinstellungsmerkmalen des KIT gehört.
Verantwortlich zeichnet dafür nicht zuletzt das Institut für Technikfolgenabschätzung und Systemanalyse (ITAS) des KIT, das 2025 sein 30-jähriges Bestehen feiert. Das ITAS hat sich in den vergangenen drei Dekaden von einer kleinen beratungsorientierten Forschungsrichtung Schritt für Schritt zu einer in Wissenschaften, in der Politik, aber auch in Öffentlichkeit und Zivilgesellschaft anerkannten Einrichtung entwickelt.

Im Colloquium Fundamentale „200 Jahre – 6 Zugänge. Entwicklungen, Ereignisse und Kontroversen in der Geschichte des KIT“ geben wir Einblicke zu der historisch gewachsenen Identität des KIT, fokussieren Probleme in seiner Geschichte und stellen heutige Ansätze des KIT zur Lösung von Interessenkonflikten vor.

Die rasante Entwicklung Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) stellt die Forschung vor tiefgreifende ethische Herausforderungen – sowohl dort, wo KI selbst Gegenstand der Forschung ist, als auch dort, wo sie als Werkzeug in wissenschaftlichen Prozessen eingesetzt wird. Der Vortrag beleuchtet diese beiden Dimensionen der Forschungsethik im Kontext von KI.
Im ersten Teil wird diskutiert, welche ethischen Fragen die Erforschung und Entwicklung von KI aufwirft. Dazu zählen etwa die Verantwortung für mögliche Fehlfunktionen, gesellschaftliche Auswirkungen von Automatisierung, Verzerrungen durch Trainingsdaten sowie der Umgang mit Autonomie und Kontrolle bei lernenden Systemen. Welche Normen und Prinzipien sollten die Forschung an Systemen prägen, deren Verhalten sich nur begrenzt vorhersagen lässt? Im zweiten Teil wird erörtert, wie sich die Rolle der Forschung verändert, wenn KI-gestützte Werkzeuge. etwa für Datenanalyse, Texterstellung oder Hypothesengenerierung, selbst Teil des wissenschaftlichen Prozesses werden. Hier stellen sich Fragen nach Transparenz, Reproduzierbarkeit, Autorenschaft, Bias und epistemischer Integrität. Kann eine Forschung, die sich KI als Assistenz bedient, noch als menschlich kontrolliert gelten – und wo verlaufen dabei die ethischen Grenzen?
Im Vortrag soll diese Doppelfunktion von KI als Forschungsgegenstand und -instrument kritisch diskutiert und anhand einschlägiger Fallbeispiele verdeutlicht werden.
In welcher Beziehung stehen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft? Wie nehmen gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen Einfluss auf die wissenschaftliche Forschung und wie wird wissenschaftliche Erkenntnis gesellschaftlich rezipiert und angewandt? Die Vorlesungsreihe mit unterschiedlichen KIT-internen und -externen Referierenden bietet einen Überblick über die Thematik, der sich in folgende Schwerpunkte gliedert: I. Das Wissenschaftssystem, II. Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit, III. Wissenschaft und Politik, IV. Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft, V. Wertediskurse.

On October 19, 2025, the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) will bid farewell to two major events with music and a grand finissage. The finissage of the anniversary exhibition “200 Years of KIT - 100 Objects. Parts of the whole. Selected Objects from the History of KIT” and the conclusion of the event series Art | Summer | Technology.
Experts from the Karlsruhe art scene will shed light on the background to the numerous exhibitions and events of the summer. With music and sparkling wine, visitors will have the last opportunity on this day to be guided through the anniversary exhibition by the curator and to talk to the organizers of the Art | Summer | Technology event series.

Vorgestellt werden: Lerninhalte, Aufbau und Qualifikationsziele des Studiengangs sowie Berufsperspektiven. Des Weiteren wird es um die formalen Zugangsvoraussetzungen zum Studium einschließlich Sprachkenntnissen und den Bewerbungsprozess insgesamt gehen. Wir nehmen außerdem die Besonderheiten des Studiengangs am KIT im Vergleich zu anderen Hochschulen in den Blick. Ein aktives Mitwirken deinerseits durch Fragen, Fragen, Fragen ist ausdrücklich erwünscht!
