Research Updates

In his guest lecture "Archives of Nature & Archives of Society: Studies on the Bohemian Forest in Computational Historical Ecology" on June 2, Arne Cypionka presented his research based on computational humanities, which digitizes and analyzes forestry maps and archival data from the 19th century to, among other things, investigate forest development in this specific region of Eastern Bavaria and visualize changes in biodiversity.

Antarctica in environmental history

PD Dr. Ole Sparenberg reported on his research on Antarctica in environmental history teaching at the History Department's research colloquium on 19 May.

Our contributions at the Gesellschaft für Technikgeschichte Conference

The German-speaking Society for the History of Technology (GTG) met at the Zeche Zollern in Dortmund on the topic of "Un|Visibilities - Energy History between Materiality, Practice and Representation", from May 7 to 9. Three contributions from the Department of History were held at the annual conference. Clarissa Kopanitsak gave a presentation on CAD modeling in heritage conservation in the Young Researchers' Forum. Ole Sparenberg presented his research on the use of peat in 19th century Berlin in the panel "Regional energy regimes: culture, politics, environment". And Nicole Hesse, who was involved in the organization and moderation of the conference as a member of the programme committee, gave a presentation on wind energy use in times of energy crisis in the 20th century.

News from research

On May 12, Florian Bettel from Vienna opened the lecture series at the History Department's research colloquium with his research report on "Plastics processing on a small scale - Viennese family businesses after 1945".

Personalia

From summer semester 2026 on, Andrea Acle-Kreysing will take over the substitute Professorship of Modern History (19th and 20th centuries) at Heidelberg University. She previously worked as a research assistant at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for almost three years. In research and teaching, she dealt with modern history with a transnational focus and habilitated at the University of Heidelberg on German-speaking exile in Latin America. We wish her all the best for the new start!
