Hardly anywhere is it so clear what significance things have for our memory as in the Pforzheim GDR Museum. As indisputable and vivid as this is, it is difficult to describe the processes of memory and memorialization in terms of temporal and cultural history, how we construct meaning from preserved material evidence. It is about subjective processes of narrative and, incidentally, always autobiographical nature, which objectively connect us with things. The lecture introduces the social life of things (A. Appadurai) in our biographies by means of some contemporary and GDR-historical examples.
